Past and Current International Programmes and Partnerships
INBOUND STUDENTS: The Department of Graphic Design is committed to building networks and partnerships with international students and their home institutions. As such, we welcome applications for our Communication Design programme from students abroad, for both the full three-year degree programme, or as part of a six month international exchange via ISEP (the International Student Exchange Program). OUTBOUND STUDENTS: The Department of Graphic Design and ISEP also offer exchange opportunities for current UJ Graphic Design students, to a network of affiliated Colleges and Universities in over 50 countries worldwide. The exchange programme covers the full costs of an academic term for selected students, including tuition, housing and meals. Read more about our students experiences below.
2026
- University of Chandigarh (India), University of Harcourt (Nigeria) Design Thinking and research -(Dr Reshma Maharajh)
- Graphic Design Histories for Creative Dissent: Archiving and Ethical Challenges (2024-2027) focuses on the timely subject of graphic objects of street protest for global movements, defining and critically engaging with histories of creative dissent since the 1950s in Brazil, South Africa and the United Kingdom to reveal graphic design鈥檚 capacity to both address and exacerbate social crises and inequalities. The project examines case studies of protest movements ranging from Women鈥檚 Liberation to anti-apartheid and LGBTQIA+ activism. The project is led by Prof Teal Triggs (RCA) from the UK, with Dr Harriet Atkinson and Dr Tai Cossich. The South African team consists of Prof Deirdre Pretorius (UJ), Prof Lee-Shae Scharnick-Udemans (UWC) and Dr Thandiwe Gamedze (UWC). The Brazilian members are Prof Priscilla Farias and Prof Guilherme Altmayer
- Lecturer Neil Badenhorst was part of a course on developing creativity across creative disciplines. The programme was coordinated by notable, award-winning musician Chrystia Cabral (US), artist name SPELLLING, and consisted of a small cohort of visual artists and musicians from the US, Germany, Saudi Arabia, with Mr Badenhorst representing South Africa.
2024
- Student Kaliska Reddy took part in a group exhibition, Symbols of Death, as part of a conference by the same name hosted by Falmouth University.
2017
- The department continued to strengthen international academic collaboration through virtual and research partnerships. Brenden Gray presented a paper via Skype to postgraduate communication design students at Falmouth University on ideology and entrepreneurship, with plans for future collaborative creative projects.
- The department also began formalising a collaborative relationship with Appalachian State University focusing on zine production, and received an invitation to participate in a Pan-African design competition at the University of Education, Winneba (Ghana).
2016
- The Faculty expanded its international collaborations through visiting researchers and academic exchanges with institutions in Australia, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Portugal, Switzerland, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Staff travelled internationally to present conference papers, deliver lectures, and participate in academic juries across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa.
- Student mobility also increased. Three second-year Graphic Design students studied in the USA, while a Jewellery Design cohort attended a short learning programme in New York City. A Fine Art student completed a three-month residency at Tufts University, Boston, while Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture students participated in fieldwork and engagement projects in Cape Verde, Malawi, and Belarus.
- Within the department, Hazel Mohlala participated in a student exchange at Arkansas State University. Students also took part in the Transparency Project, coordinated by Deirdre Pretorius, involving global student participation.
2015
