Title:听AI and the Skills Gap: Exploring the Impact of AI Tools on the Skills Development and Work Prospects of Knowledge Based Gig Workers.

Summary:听 This research explores how knowledge-based gig workers in South Africa such as IT consultants and digital marketers integrate artificial intelligence into their professional workflows to navigate a global skills gap that threatens to displace 85 million jobs by 2025.听By applying听AI-Enabled Individual Entrepreneurship Theory听and听Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the study investigates whether AI acts as a tool for “knowledge democratization” that enhances worker autonomy and higher-value contract acquisition, or if it exacerbates precarity through algorithmic control.听Utilizing a mixed-methods approach involving surveys and semi-structured interviews, the project aims to provide empirical evidence for how emerging market professionals “sense, seize, and reconfigure” their skill sets to maintain a competitive advantage in a rapidly digitizing economy.
