The Learning Technologies Unit (LTU) has, for many years, been at the forefront of transforming teaching and learning through the meaningful integration of digital technologies. Working across diverse educational contexts, the Unit supports teachers, lecturers, and researchers in exploring cutting鈥慹dge tools and pedagogical practices that enrich learning environments and expand what is possible in contemporary education.
Our longstanding focus on innovation in learning technologies opens exciting pathways for students interested in postgraduate study in fields where digital transformation and education intersect. Whether working in schools, higher education, training environments, or community-based learning spaces, our graduates are equipped to lead, design, and evaluate technology-enhanced teaching and learning with confidence.
Postgraduate Studies in ICT in Education
As the fully online Master鈥檚 Degree in ICTs in Education concludes in 2026, the LTU continues its mission of developing thought leaders, researchers, and specialists through our residential Master鈥檚 and PhD programmes. These programmes are rooted in:

Our Academic Contribution Across UJ Programmes
BEd Honours in STEM Education
The Unit plays a central role in shaping the intellectual rigour of the BEd Honours programme.
- Prof G. Lautenbach leads the pivotal Research Methodology for STEM Researchers module.
- Prof C. van der Westhuizen and Dr J. Goto shape the thought leaders in ICT spaces by facilitating the Current Issues module. Dr Goto also facilitates the Educational Theory module.
Undergraduate Teaching and Learning
Unit members also make substantial contributions to UJ鈥檚 undergraduate teacher education programmes:
- Teaching Studies 1A (21st鈥慍entury Teacher) is facilitated by Prof Lautenbach, Prof Van der Westhuizen, and Dr Bailey.
- ICT Support role (ITS) modules are facilitated throughout the four years of the BEd programme by the whole unit.
- Basic Computer Skills is coordinated by Dr Bailey, ensuring students gain strong foundational digital literacy.
- Teaching Studies 3B (Integrating Technologies into Teaching and Learning), taught by Prof Lautenbach, focuses on developing personal learning networks through current tools, apps, and digital services. This module proudly holds the distinction of being UJ鈥檚 first undergraduate online module鈥攁nd it continues to run successfully online.
- In senior years, Subject Methodology modules address the Role of the ICT Support Specialist, presented by Dr Moodley and Dr Bailey.
