About the Centre

The Centre for Data and Digital Communications (CDDC), under the directorship of Prof. Sifiso Mnisi, is an interdisciplinary research hub advancing critical scholarship at the intersection of data, media, and communication in Africa and the Global South. The Centre examines how digital technologies, platforms, and data systems shape media practices, governance, culture, citizenship, and democratic life. Through five research clusters, CDDC produces policy-relevant, socially responsive research on artificial intelligence, digital inclusion, information integrity, surveillance, and digital cultures, while supporting postgraduate training, early-career scholars, and strategic partnerships that promote ethical communication, digital justice, and inclusive technological development.

Vision

To be an internationally recognised centre of excellence and innovation, using as its platform Johannesburg, South Africa鈥檚 economic hub, to resolve and understand media and communication challenges in the context of a thoroughgoing digital transformation.

Mission

To generate distinctly African, socially relevant insights at the intersection of media, communication, and digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, while advancing knowledge creation, innovation, and ethical practice that respond to the realities of digital transformation in Africa and the Global South.
