International law is the study of the rules that govern the relations between states and the functioning of the international community. This module takes a South African and African approach to foundational concepts of international law, such as statehood and recognition, sources of international law, state responsibility, the enforcement of international law, and jurisdiction. Students will also engage with specialised areas of international law, including extradition, refugee law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law. The topics covered in this module will provide students with practical legal knowledge that is applicable to the critical analysis of current events, from the functioning of the United Nations, violations of human rights and armed conflicts. International law equips students to be engaged, global citizens.
