Introduction to Law 100: This first-year service module, specifically tailored for non-law students pursuing a Bachelor of Accounting degree, provides foundational legal knowledge. The course begins by introducing essential legal terminology and key concepts, ensuring that students develop a strong understanding of the language of law. Students are guided through the history and objectives of the South African legal system, allowing them to appreciate the broader context within which laws are developed and applied. Beyond theoretical knowledge, the module introduces students to a diverse range of legal disciplines, including contract law, criminal law, business enterprise law and constitutional law. Through these topics, students learn how various legal areas intersect with everyday life, affecting individuals, businesses, and society as a whole. The module integrates detailed discussions on professional ethics, the importance of human rights, and the development of strong legal research skills, all of which are essential for informed citizenship and professional conduct. Throughout the module, real-world scenarios are incorporated to bridge the gap between legal theory and practice, ensuring students gain hands-on experience analysing how laws operate in practice. This approach not only deepens their understanding of legal principles but also encourages them to think critically, question assumptions, and form their own reasoned opinions about the South African legal system and its impact on society.
