Introduction to Legal Studies (ITLS) is a year module for all first year LLB, BCom (Law) and BA (Law) students. The course leader is Miss Nicole Deokiram who will ensure, amongst other things, and together with a team of lecturers who are specialists in their own field, a pleasant and qualitative education experience for all first-year students. In the ITLS course students are introduced to the law and the different areas of the law, including but not limited to, human rights, social justice, sustainable development principles, ethics, the legal profession, the law of contract, the law of delict, commercial law, the law of civil procedure, the South African court system, alternative dispute resolution forums, criminal justice, 4IR, labour law and the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. There is also a compulsory moot court where students are given a factual scenario and thereafter are required to draft pleadings and appear in court to present their oral arguments. The course is enhanced by the law mentor and team of skilled ITLS tutors who will ensure, amongst other things, that each student is also provided with individualised care.
