About Mx Laurinda van Tonder​​​

Laurinda van Tonder started their academic journey at the as a student completing a BA (Language Practitioners) degree.

After realizing that they wanted to pursue a career as an academic, Laurinda worked as a private language tutor (to gain general teaching experience), joined the School of Communications as a student assistant (to gain institutional knowledge), secured a position as tutor in the Department of Linguistics (to gain field-specific teaching experience) and worked as a research assistant for two UJ staff members (to better understand the research process).

After completing their BA (Hons) Applied Linguistics degree while also working full-time at a digital marketing agency and starting to freelance as a translator and interpreter (to gain industry-specific experience), Laurinda was invited to join the Department of Linguistics as a part-time junior lecturer for Linguistics and Language Practice. During this time, Laurinda also worked as a virtual office assistant for the South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) (to gain professional association experience).

In 2018, Laurinda joined North-West University as a full-time academic where they eventually served as Subject Chair for Language Practice on the Potchefstroom campus.

During this time, Laurinda completed their MA (Applied Linguistics) degree and successfully passed the SATI simultaneous interpreting accreditation exam for interpreting from Afrikaans to English and from English to Afrikaans. They also presented multiple full-day Autshumato (and later OmegaT) workshops on behalf of NWU’s Centre for Text Technology (CTexT) to both academics and language practitioners across South Africa.

In 2022, Laurinda joined the ’s Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics (LanCSAL) where they are currently working on completing their PhD (Applied Linguistics) degree.

In terms of professional and academic associations, Laurinda serves as Vice-Chairperson on the SATI Executive Council (2024-2027) and webmaster on the Executive Committee of the South African Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Society (SALALS) (2024-2027).

Laurinda also serves as Secretary-General of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) and is a member of two FIT Standing Committees, namely the Audiovisual Translation and Accessibility SC and the Technology SC for the 2025 to 2028 mandate.

Laurinda has supervised more than 25 third-year and honours students and co-supervised 4 Master’s students to completion.
