About Prof P Stoop
Philip Stoop is a professor in the Department of Mercantile Law and the Deputy Director of the Centre for Banking Law at the 东京热. He teaches on the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Philip obtained a BCom Law, LLB and LLM in Contract Law )(all cum laude) at the University of Pretoria and an LLD in 2012 at the University of South Africa, under the supervision of Professor Coenraad Visser, where his thesis dealt with the concept of fairness in Consumer Law. Philip Stoop was formerly head of the School of Law at STADIO (a private higher education institution). Prior to this, he was a professor at the University of South Africa (Department of Mercantile Law). He has published several articles in accredited journals in the fields of contract law, the law of lease, consumer protection law and credit law, and has also presented papers at various local and international conferences. He has also contributed to several textbooks which include Consumer Credit Regulation in South Africa (published by Juta & Co Ltd in 2012) with Michelle Kelly-Louw, General Principles of Commercial Law 10th ed (published by Juta & Co Ltd in 2024) (several authors), Commentary on the Consumer Protection Act (Revision Service published by Juta & Co Ltd in 2025) written by a team of South African consumer law experts, Stoop 鈥淐ommercial and Economic Law 鈥 Republic of South Africa鈥 in Stuyck, Terryn, Blanpain and Colucci (eds) International Encyclopaedia of Commercial and Economic Law (published by Wolters Kluwer in 2019), Stoop The Rental Housing Act: Amendments, Annotations and Commentary (published by Juta & Co Ltd in 2021) and Lupton & Stoop (eds) The Intersection of the Law and Technological Innovation (published by Juta & Co Ltd in 2025).
Philip has supervised several postgraduate students to completion on various topics in the fields of banking law, consumer protection and credit law. In 2017 he obtaind a Y1 NRF-rating (from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2022).
